Everything hard is hired in our building. Bring warm, waterproof layers: roughly −5 to −15°C in January.

Everything hard is hired at the Intersport in our building: skis or boards, boots and poles. What you bring is warm, waterproof layers and the small things that are miserable to forget at 3,000 m. Val Thorens is the highest resort in Europe, so plan for cold: roughly −5 to −15°C in January, colder in the wind at the top.

  • Layersthermal base layer (merino or synthetic, never cotton), then a fleece or light puffer, then a waterproof ski jacket and salopettes
  • Hands and headwaterproof gloves or mittens (mittens are warmer) with thin liners, a neck warmer, a beanie for the evenings
  • Eyes and skingoggles with a low-light lens for flat light, sunglasses for lunch, SPF 50 and SPF lip balm; the sun burns at altitude even in January
  • Socksone pair of proper ski socks in the boot, never two; bring three pairs
  • Hiredskis or board, boots and poles; helmets only if they are on the booking, so check yours or bring one
  • Don’t buyboots or skis for one week. For clothes, borrow first; otherwise Decathlon’s Wedze range, TK Maxx or Mountain Warehouse
  • On the planewear the ski jacket and your bulkiest layers so they don’t take up bag space
  • Pool and saunatight swim trunks (French pools usually ban board shorts) and flip-flops

It is only the true first-timers — two days on the free carpets, then the half-price EasyRider pass — for whom a full pass is money wasted.

Most whole apartments sold on booking.com and VRBO are non classé, which triggers the 5% proportional rate. The gap between best and worst case on the French week is €246 across the group. Ask the owner for the classification in writing. Also check whether the platform already collected it — since 2019 they legally must for non-professional lessors, so you can be charged twice at the desk.

Flight traps · verified

  • BA London City → Innsbruck stops 9 January 2027. Runs 12 Dec – 9 Jan only. Does not operate on Sat 16 Jan.
  • Luton → Innsbruck is Sunday-only. Useless for a Saturday changeover.
  • Ski carriage differs structurally. BA absorbs skis into the checked allowance; easyJet and Jet2 charge for skis on top of a hold bag with no weight pooling.

Saturday Innsbruck arrivals that do work: BA2618 LGW 08:25→11:25 · easyJet EZY8693 LGW 07:00→09:55 · BA0686 LHR 10:00→13:05.

Two operational moves worth making

  • Book the Val Thorens transfer private and request the Moûtiers supermarket stop at booking time. Ski-Lifts permits stops on private transfers only, with advance notice. Resort shelf prices run 10–30% higher.
  • Sherpa closes 12:30–16:00 and keys hand over "at the latest 5pm". A Saturday afternoon arrival can land with no shop open — the valley stop is the reliable fix for night one.

No group discount exists at either resort

Les 3 Vallées “Family Flex”max 2 adults, needs 1 child — you do not qualify
Ski Arlberg groups1 free per 20 paying, company/club letterhead — you do not qualify
Hire shopsno published adult group rate at Intersport or Sport 2000

Do not budget a group discount. The only real cross-sell found: Audacius (the ski school formerly called Prosneige) gives 15% off kit if you book lessons with them.

Not verified · do not quote these as prices

  • All flight fares — BA, easyJet, Swiss, TUI, Ryanair all JS-rendered. Only Jet2's published lead fares were retrievable.
  • Sport 2000 Val Thorens season year — no hire period shown, unlike the St Anton page.
  • Après drink prices — MooserWirt and Krazy Kanguruh publish nothing. Largest uncontrolled line in the budget.
  • Grocery prices — no shelf data for Sherpa, SPAR, MPREIS or BILLA. The 10–30% resort premium is one blog's claim.
  • French linen, towel and cleaning charges 2026/27 — practice confirmed, amounts unpublished. Only 2018 figures exist.
  • Arlberg Express private taxi 2026/27 — only 2025/26 published.
  • Méribel and Courchevel for 9–16 Jan — never priced. No bed/bath data either.
  • Saalbach for 16–23 Jan — never priced.
  • Mayrhofen lift distances — sheet reads "Yes" throughout.

Sheet data-quality notes

  • The sheet's "price pp" column divides by property capacity, not your group size. Every figure here is recomputed at 8 or 10.
  • Several properties appear twice at different prices — Les Chalets du Thorens £1,549 and £1,858, Le Portillo, the Superbe duplex. Different units or capture dates.
  • 14 Saalbach rows are "2 Apartments" — the group is split across two units, which breaks the stay-together requirement.
  • Bed/bath is missing on all Méribel, Courchevel and most Alpe d'Huez rows.

Food

Where to eat in each resort, and the one place the two source documents disagree on money.

BasisTrip ATrip BWhat it assumes

The ~£2,081pp all-in figure on the Costs tab uses the lean number. If the group actually intends to eat out the way the lists below imply, add roughly £180–250pp to that total. Do not quote the lean all-in to people and then plan the eating-out week.

The cheapest food decision is made before you fly

Both weeks are self-catered in every option currently on the table, so the food number is set by how many dinners happen in the chalet. Booking one supermarket delivery for the arrival day — and agreeing up front how many nights are eating-out nights — is worth more than any individual restaurant choice on this page. Menu prices are live and were captured for planning only; re-check before booking anything that needs a deposit.

This list is shared. Changes save to the group board within a second and everyone else sees them within ten. The chip above shows the state. If it says Offline your edits are held on this device and will not reach the others — reload when you have signal. Table filters and which tab you are on stay on your own device.

Part week counts as a body in the chalet but flags that they are not there for all seven nights — it matters when the bill gets split.

Whole-property prices from the self-catered sheet, divided by the number you set. Rows dim when the group outgrows them.

Board plans Trip A at 10.

Everything on the board is now whole-property self-catered, so the price does divide by the headcount — every extra person genuinely lowers the per-head cost, right up to the property’s capacity. Watch the capacity column rather than the price.
